Our History & "P" Values

Making History... In a Good Way

The life of our Credit Union started out as just two "smaller-than-a-breadbox" organizations. It was in 1962 that St. Vincent Portland Federal Credit Union was the first to be chartered. The Credit Union happily served St. Vincent employees and their families, and they... happily accepted. Seven years later, in 1969, the second credit union was formed – Providence Portland Employees Federal Credit Union. Nice.

So, with just a small handful of depositors, a borrowed employee, and a volunteer Board of Directors, the two small groups of employees started their own not-for profit employee credit unions. Both credit unions provided the medical industry employees competitive loan and deposit rates, convenient services as well as a strong commitment in guiding members to a brighter financial future.

In 1997, the two credit unions decided it made more sense to merge together to help build one successful and promising credit union. It was clear if they named themselves – St. Vincent Portland Providence Employees Federal Credit Union – it would be a mouthful (the name couldn't fit on a pen anyway), so they named themselves "Providence Health System Federal Credit Union".

Thirteen years later, in 2010, to help ensure our identity as a full-financial institution and to stay true to the strength of our core partnership, we changed our name to Providence Federal Credit Union and created a new logo and tagline.

We are now one of the largest credit unions in Oregon and Washington who serves employees and their families in the health care industry. Click here to see if you're eligible to join a group of people who wants to get wise about saving, spending, and getting connected with their finances.

Our "P" Values

Much Ado About…a Lot Actually

Take a peek at our internal values. You'll see P is our fav letter. Actually, P is more than just a letter. P stands for progress and pride. It stands for the parents with kids and dreams and plans. P is for personal, the only kind of attention we give. And for the pact we have with every one of our members. P is for promise and peace of mind. P is for pachycephalosaurus, which your third grader can help you pronounce.

The letter P is for professional, but never cold and unfriendly. P is for pies, pumpkin, pecan and peach. It's for people, real people who make decisions with members in mind. P stands for philanthropy – giving back to the community we are dedicated to serving. P is for the Pacific, the Northwest in which we live and work. P is for potential and planning. And P is for Providence Federal Credit Union. Are we who you want to partner and introduce your family to? We hope so.

People:

We are a people-centered organization. Having the right people to partner and represent this Credit Union is essential for our success. By providing our people the education, coaching, and the right tools will help them to not only better serve our members and the community, but for their own personal and professional victories. We are both students and leaders. We are independent thinkers. "The person who sweeps the floor should choose the broom". We are connected with each other. Our people do not lack praises, respect, recognition and rewards. We care and inspire, and in turn, they care and inspire – for our members, team players (co-workers), coaches (management team), volunteers (board of directors) and the community. We believe that "if you grow people, the people will grow the business".

We are worth following.

Promise:

No bond is stronger than our words and our actions. They go hand-in-hand. We promise to deliver our services beyond their expectations with class, professionalism, empathy, and smiles. We promise to work hard in supporting our community whether they are monetary or on our own time. We promise to build trust and strive to speak the truth internally and externally.

Passion:

We're passionate about our work, our members, our people. We put our philosophy into action. We live by our P values. We will give members and the community the experience what's been missing from their financial institutions, from a partner. And we will embrace what they give us in return.

Protection:

We're vigilant about protecting our members' personal information and assets. We'll continue to seek opportunities to invest in the most cost-effective and cost-efficient technologies to ensure our members' information are well-protected and remain confidential.

Priority:

At Providence Federal Credit Union no priority is greater than our members. We'll work at achieving our goals in response time to issuing loans, addressing concerns, problem-solving with solutions over the phone, electronically and in-person. If we can't fulfill their wishes on time, someone else will.
